Course Details:
- This course is the State of Texas Certified Concealed Handgun Licensing course.
- New CHL Tuition: $125.00
(Includes Classroom instruction, passport photos, notary, qualification, and lunch.)
- Renewal Tuition: $75.00
- Length: 10 hours for New CHL license / 4 hours for CHL renewels.
Equipment:
- Semi Automatic Handgun or Revolver of appropriate size and caliber.
- (1) magazine for semi automatic handguns.
- 50 rounds of ammunition per qualification attempt. Up to 3 attempts allowed.
- Eye and Ear protection.
- Appropriate clothing for the range/weather.
Qualifications
To qualify for a Texas CHL you must:
- Be 21 years old. (Members and former members of the armed forces must be 18.)
- Have a clean criminal history, including military service and recent juvenile records.
- Not be under a protective order.
- Not be chemically dependent.
- Not be of unsound mind.
- Not be delinquent in paying fines, fees, child support, student loans, etc.
- Be eligible to purchase a handgun by completing the NICS check.
- Complete required training.

Don't have a handgun?
If you don't have a handgun to use in your CHL
class, we can rent one to you for only $10.00 plus the cost of
ammution. We have several popular models to choose from. Rentals are on a
first come first serve basis.

Applying for a License
There are two preliminary steps to obtaining a Texas concealed handgun license.
- 1. Completing an application and
- 2. Taking a training course.
Completing the Application. (Two options to complete the application)

Submitting your request by mail:
- Your instructor will have application packages for mail submission.
- You will fill out the forms in the package during class.
- All forms will be notarized during class.
- Passport photos will be taken during class.
- Fingerprints will be taken during class on the FBI fingerprint cards.
- Submitting a request by internet:
You will need:
- Your Social Security Number.
- Your Texas Driver License or Texas Identification card.
- A valid credit card. (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express)
Complete the online process.
- DPS will take your application online and provide you with the information to complete the process.

Taking the Training Course
Taking the training course for your new CHL
will require 10 to 15 hours, and includes a written examination and
firearms qualification. You must pass both with a score of 70% or
better.
- The written exam covers law, nonviolent dispute resolution, and safe handgun handling, use, and storage.
- The shooting practical requires you to fire fifty rounds (slow fire) from a handgun of .32 caliber or greater, 20 rounds at three yards, 20 rounds at seven yards, and 10 at fifteen yards. If you qualify with a semi-auto you will be able to carry a semi automatic or a revolver. If you qualify with a revolver you are only certified to carry a revolver.
After you pass the written test and handgun
qualification you will receive two copies of your certificate of
training (CHL-100).
You can now submit your application:
- Make sure all the forms correctly completed filled out.
- Include a copy of the Form CHL-100.
- If you did not not pay online you will need to send the appropriate payment for the licensing fee.
- It is a good idea to make a copy of your completed application and send it certified mail or return receipt requested.
- Send the completed application to DPS. There will be a period of several weeks for them to process your application.
- If you pass the application process and receive a Concealed Handgun License please look it over and make sure
the information is true and correct.
If you need to modify your license to change
your name or address or to go from an NSA (non semi-auto) to an SA
(semi-auto) license, or replace a lost or destroyed license, the
forms are available online from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
